What does 'culture' mean? Better practices?

I'm not getting it.

Posted by Lyn Sims, Schaumburg IL Real Estate (RE/MAX Suburban) about 2 years ago

"Culture" is about a value system and behavioral expectations within a community. IIMHO - if people don't know about the HIGH STANDARDS with wihich AR began, the community Be Nice/Be Respectful (BNBR) basis could be lost.

For example, in a certain culture, the highest compliment to give a host at a dinner was to spit on the floor while eating. (Yes, odd, but it is true.) That is not the cultural norm in the USA. Cultures differ ...

The AR Founders stated: "Please take these rules [Community Guidelines] seriously. Don't try to look for loopholes; instead, take them to heart and respect the spirit in which they were created."

AR's behavior suggestions are in the Community Guidelines.  Here are few examples:
"Respect Fair Housing law."
"Don't advertise yourself in comments on another's post."
"Do not personally attack another person.

"Do not send unsolicited email, fax or make unsolicited calls."
"Respect Copyright."
"Do not republish MEMBER ONLY material."
"Free speech but not hate speech, slurs or stereotypes..."
"Points for original material only. Not jokes, recipes, inspirational quotes or poems, government websites, Bible verses or links with no value."

Doesn't say "do not" post those types - just don't ask for points for them! Honor system ...

AR has ten basic principles - those are detailed in the Weltanschauung. Two examples:
#6. ActiveRain prides itself on editorial independence. We believe that an open, free exchange of ideas is our primary reason for being. We are not captive to any point of view or agenda — other than to advance the interests of home buyers, sellers, and real estate professionals.

#8. We believe in spirited discourse, but personal attacks or predatory behavior will not be tolerated.  Respect and civility are the shared values that unite us all.

Again - to keep from being a negative community - the Founders offered positive Principles and Guidelines. If we don't know them, we could lose the value of AR as a community leading with respect to prosperity.

All the best - Lynn

PS Keep the questions coming! L.
