UPDATE:

Because a portion of I-85 Northbound near Piedmont Rd. has collapsed,
all lanes on Interstate 85 in that area will be closed 3/31/17.

NOTE:  The Southbound I-85 Express Lane will operate at HOV3+ only
from 6 am - 10 am Friday, March 31.
During these hours, only transit vehicles and vehicles with three or more occupants will be allowed to use the Southbound Express Lane.

The toll rate signs will indicate "HOV3+" to alert motorists that only vehicles with three or more occupants are allowed access to the lanes.

The signs will change back to display toll rates when toll paying customers are allowed to access the lanes again.

The northbound Express Lane is not affected and will operate as normal.

Thanks to excellent work by First Responders, on Thursday, March 30th,
no motorists were injured when the bridges collapsed.

The fire, according to the Atlanta Police Department, started in some conduit wire stored just North of the bridge that crosses Piedmont Avenue.

All cars were redirected off the bridges before the collapse averting any possible injuries to people in the cars.

Notify Atlanta uses a computerized phone call system to alert Atlanta residents about important situations. The calls came every 30 minutes during the emergency. First, warning to stay away from the area. Next, stating that the fire was under control. In the final call, motorists were warned again to use other routes and avoid the area.

As you will see in the maps below - avoiding that intersection is NOT easy.

After the fire, traffic lanes for I-85 both Northbound and Southbound are closed. The Buford/Spring Connector is also closed. The road that is now called the Connector was the original two-lane I-85 when the Interstate was constructed.

The location of the Bridge Collapse creates a PERFECT STORM
for traffic entering or leaving Atlanta.

The final Notify Atlanta call announced that City of Atlanta Government offices will not open until 10:00 am on March 31st and that includes the court system as well.

Detailed look at the Bridge Location

The gray area just to the left of the damaged Bridges is the Railyard where the MARTA Rapid Transit cars are gathered in the Lindbergh Station area.

Fortunately, MARTA is still functioning normally. Hopefully, many of the daily commuters from the suburbs  will switch from cars to rapid transit for a while.

AND – it is Spring Break Weekend in Atlanta. Hmm …

Stay Safe!!!
